Ashley Brockington moved to New York City in 2001 to join Circus Amok, a queer political street theater company. Touring the city’s parks every summer with Jennifer Miller and her merry band of queer acrobats, jugglers and musicians taught Ashley how much power can be harnessed when politics is combined with performance. From there Ashley made her way to the scrappy theaters of the Lower East Side, specifically the WOW café theatre, the only theater run by a collective of women and transgendered artists. There, Ashley learned how to self-produce and run a small theater. She produced two successful monthly cabarets and created a five-year performance project dedicated to understanding and undoing the effects of low self-esteem in black women and girls.
After finishing her BA in Theater at Brooklyn College, Ashley joined the New York Neo-Futurists, a wild bunch of writer/director/actors that produce a weekly show in the East Village that presents 30 original short plays in 60 minutes. Currently Ashley works as an Artistic Associate at Dixon Place Experimental Theater where she is responsible for curating and programming the two stages. In 2020 she created a new festival at Dixon Place called the Femme Fest that featured artists the identify on the Feminine End of the Gender Spectrum. This year will be the third year that she has programmed the award winning HOT Festival, Dixon Place’s annual celebration of queer culture.
