DJ Tikka Masala is a Brooklyn-based DJ, producer, and artist, originally from Kolkata, India, and raised mostly in Princeton, New Jersey. She is resident DJ at the historical Henrietta Hudson, the oldest lesbian bar in the country, where she has been throwing a Thursday night party called Homotown, since 2014. This event was listed on the New York Times roundup of the hottest parties for queer women, in their Pride 50 issue, and draws a diverse local audience of queer womxn from the 5 boroughs and beyond.
Prior to this West Village residency, she threw several well-attended regular, events in Brooklyn including That’s My Jam, and Miss Thang (2007-2012). Tikka’s family in India, Pakrashi Harmonium, have been building harmoniums and other indian classical instruments, since 1923 and she grew up studying Indian Vocal classical music, prior to becoming a New York City nightlife fixture. She has DJ-ed all over the world, including DJ-ed the Obama White House in 2010.
In 2011 she started producing and composing music for the Obie and Bessie award winning geology-inspired feminist acrobatic company, LAVA Brooklyn. Since 2018 Tikka has been on the New York City’s Mayor’s Office’s Nightlife Advisory Board, which interfaces between the worlds of nightlife and public policy.
During the day Tikka is the communications department for The Audre Lorde Project, a movement organizing and education center for Queer People of Color, serving the 5 boroughs, and inspiring the world to center the needs and voices of marginalized communities by catalyzing social change.
