Black Cinema: Blade (1998)

Film And Community Discussion Exploring Black Representation in Superhero Films

Join us at HPAC on Thursday, May 4th at 6pm for the kickoff of our Black Cinema series with the groundbreaking film, Blade (1998, New Line/HBOmax). This thrilling movie, based on Marv Wolfman’s Marvel comic, stars Wesley Snipes as the iconic vampire hunter and features the first Black lead in a Marvel film. Blade’s success not only demonstrated the viability of superhero movies in mainstream media but also paved the way for greater representation of Black talent in the genre.

As part of our “Black Superheroes Before Black Panther” theme, this event offers a unique opportunity to explore the historical and cultural significance of Black representation in superhero films. Join us for the screening at 6pm, followed by a thought-provoking talkback and discussion, facilitated by The Black Library’s Co-Program Directors, Douglas Shindler and Michael Davis, and HPAC’s Co-Executive Director, Ellyane Hutchinson.

Don’t miss this chance to engage in meaningful conversation and celebrate the pioneering role Blade played in shaping the superhero landscape.
